Acer Iconia W700

Acer’s Iconia W700 is the first Windows 8 tablet to grace PC Pro’s labs. The real surprise is the price: for just Rs 76,999, the Iconia W700 packs in an 11.6in Full HD touch screen, a Core i3 processor and somehow finds room in the budget for a case, a docking station and a Bluetooth keyboard. The Acer Iconia W700 is something different. It’s a tablet with a laptop-class processor and a docking station that lets you use the system like a desktop.

New Songs

Just place it on a desk and work as if you were using a full-fledged laptop or desktop. You can even plug in an external display if you want a larger monitor.

The idea is that you keep the dock and keyboard at work or in your home, and use it like a full PC.

The added HDMI means you can connect it to an external monitor so you’d have no idea you were using a tablet at all. When you leave, just pull the tablet out from the dock, for games, apps and browsing on the move.

The tablet itself weighs about 2 pounds and appears to get roughly all-day battery life of around 7 hours or so. That gives it better battery life than most laptops, but it falls a bit short of what you’d expect from an iPad or high-end Android tablet. Still, it’s pretty impressive for a tablet with a laptop chip and laptop-class performance.

Acer’s Iconia W700 is a reasonable attempt at a consumer Windows 8 tablet, and it’s keenly priced.

On the move, the lack of a docking keyboard makes it far less usable than many rival tablets or hybrid devices, and the absence of active stylus support hinders its appeal as a dedicated tablet. Still, for the price and the features involved, this tablet is a steal, available at Shophive.com.

PTI Mobile App

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaaf has launched its mobile app for iOS while the Android version is said to be in the making as of now. The App was launched by the PTI Mobile App Team (Jibran Ilyas, Haris Siddique, Aly Boghani) in collaboration with their Web Management and the Social Media Team. The about section of the App states that the project was initiated by Youth of PTI (USA) and is built with the supports of volunteers. PTI iOS App is retina optimized and supports the latest iPhone 5 screen size while its total size is around 18.8 MB.

New Songs

Lets have a look what this App has to offer:

Voter Verification (Powered by Nadra)

Tap on a button on the home screen and compose SMS message window pops up where voters can send their CNIC number and get their voter verification details.

Insaf Radio

A button on the Landing screen takes you to “TuneIn” web page within the App where the audio stream can be listened. (TuneIn is a famous broadcasting hosting service). At the moment the Radio features requires you to download an additional App “TuneIn”, the lack of in-App radio stream support seems disappointing. However this can be enhanced in upcoming versions.

Insaf TV

Although essentially a webpage, yet the video viewing experience is leaps ahead of the Audio Stream (Radio) capabilities. The webpage opens within the App, which has a responsive design (optimized for mobile) and the overall interface seems like a YouTube clone — having features like Search, Like/Dislike, Share etc. (Content is populated from http://insafpk.tv/)

Contribution

Also available on the landing screen, a shortcut for the user to donate from their Credit Card to PTI. This is a powerful feature however executed poorly. The action forces the user outside the app, opening up a window in mobile safari browser.

The webpage presented is not even mobile optimized that leads to a lot of pinching in and out to accomplish what should have a been made an experience that is delightful and simple as possible.

A dedicated tab in the bottom navigation bar also takes you to donation page

News & Twitter

The second tab at the bottom navigation us for News, which are aggregated from the Insaf website and the official Facebook page of PTI. Similarly twitter feeds are shown in the twitter section.

I found the segmented controllers used at the top a painful experience to organize content from various sources. They are tiny, hard to read and tap on. Wastage of negative space should have been put to better use. Although efforts to maintain consistency throughout the App should be applauded. Worth mentioning here is the Twitter API integration which makes sharing a tweet is super easy.

Actions

A must have feature for every political party. Actions include: Become A Paying Member, Sign-Up To Volunteer and Share this App. I did a quick test of the ‘Share this App’ as a Facebook post. Disappointingly instead of sharing the App, the App forced me to share the insaf.pk url instead. No Facebook post preview was shown, Facebook iOS 6 API should have been put to use here.

‘Become a Paying Member’ and ‘Sign-up to Volunteer’ are in-app forms in which the user can fill their information. (This is what contribute section should have been like: an In-App form). Although I don’t approve the overall designs of these forms, tiny font and wastage of precious mobile screen. But they serve the purpose and get the job done.

Info

This section of the App displays information related to the political party. There are 6 large buttons on this info page (Ideology, Policies, Constitution, Leadership Assets, About the App ). Most of these are linked to documents instead of native pages. Seems like the development team were rushed and they included document files instead of copying and formatting the content on native app pages.

There is a wealth of information in these document ranging from constitution to policies on economy, health, energy etc. that will help PTI spread its message influencing potential voters and supports.

Conclusion

In my brief testing the App ran smoothly and no bugs were encountered in an ideal use-case (Internet connectivity on), however in Airplane Mode the twitter section caused the App to crash on my iPhone 5. Overall I didn’t like the green background design with spaghetti of fonts and also the excessive use of maroon throughout the app.

At the expense of readability, political branding shouldn’t have been the dominating factor in design decisions. I’m sure there are other ways for achieving branding goals.

In terms of functionality there are some interesting concepts of how the political party has tried to bring together its digital media in a cohesive experience. Perhaps what is even more interesting to see is how this initial effort transforms over the months and what response comes from other political parties. PTI is the first one in the mobile market but would it be able to dominate this segment, only time time would tell.

HTC New Flagship One

HTC One HTC Unveils its New Flagship, the One

After teasing it for months, yesterday HTC finally revealed its newest flagship, called the One, HTC One. The flagship boasts a 4.7 inch Full HD 1080p display and a first-in-its-class ‘Ultrapixel camera’. It runs on Android 4.1.2 coupled with HTC’s new Sense 5 skin.

Pakistani Songs

Just like last year, HTC has again beaten Samsung, its nemesis, by unveiling its flagship first. Here are the specs in detail:

Design and Hardware

The HTC One is made of aluminium and is a bit heavy by current standards at 143g. It is 9.3mm thick. As you might’ve imagined, its a unibody design. It will be available in Red, Black and Silver colour versions.

At the front is the big 4.7 inch display and at either sides of it are stereo speakers which are quite loud at 93db, thanks to HTC’s BoomSound technology.

Under the hood, the HTC One runs on a 1.7Ghz Quad-core Krait processor with Snapdragon 600 chipset along with 2GBs of RAM. The GPU is an Adreno 320 one. The storage tops at 32 or 64GB along with 25GB of Dropbox storage but there is no microSD card slot onboard so expanding memory is out of question.

Display

The display of the HTC One is a 4.7 inches big Super LCD3 touchscreen. It is a Full HD 1080p unit with a resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels which translates to a pixel density of 469 pixels per inch. It is protected by Gorilla Glass 2 plus HTC’s own ‘Infinity Glass’ which makes it even more resistant to scratches.

Software

The phone runs on Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean which although isn’t up to date, will surely bring a lot of features to the pack. It is coupled by HTC’s newest Sense 5 UI. In this latest version of Sense, HTC has tried to make the overall OS a bit less childish and more mature but obviously more functional.

Camera

The camera is easily one of the most exciting aspects of the HTC One. Instead of flowing along with the trend by announcing a high megapixel camera, HTC chose the other way round by showcasing a new ‘Ultrapixel’ camera. According to HTC, Ultrapixels are larger than the normal smartphone pixels which improves image quality and allow more light to be taken inside. HDR and Optical Image Stabilisation are there too. Its a 4 megapixel unit and has an LED flash along with it.

A 2.1mp Full HD front facing camera is there too

The rest of the details

The battery is a 2300 mAh one and since the design is unibody, is non-removable. The connectivity package is complete Bluetooth 4.0, NFC (in some markets), microUSB 2.0, GPS, 4G LTE (I hear a lot of you sighing) and Wifi/ Wifi-Hotspot.

Speaking of 4G, the phone has a micro-sim card slot so regular, increasingly unpopular SIMs won’t work in this phone.

Specs:

  • Hardware:
    • Processor: Quad-core 1.7 GHz Krait 300
    • Chipset: Qualcomm APQ8064T Snapdragon 600
    • GPU: Adreno 320
  • OS: Android OS, v4.1.2 (Jelly Bean), upgradable to v4.2.2 (Jelly Bean)
  • Design:
    • Dimensions: 137.4 x 68.2 x 9.3 mm (5.41 x 2.69 x 0.37 in)
    • Weight: 143 g
  • Display:
    • Super LCD3 capacitive touchscreen, 16M colors
    • 1080 x 1920 pixels, 4.7 inches (~469 ppi pixel density)
    • Corning Gorilla Glass 2
    • HTC Sense UI
  • Memory:
    • Card slot: No
    • Internal: 32/64 GB, 2 GB RAM
  • Connectivity: GPRS, EDGE, HSPA+; LTE, Cat3, 50 Mbps UL, 100 Mbps DL, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/ac/b/g/n, Wi-Fi Direct, DLNA, Wi-Fi hotspot, Bluetooth v4.0 with A2DP, NFC, Infrared, microUSB v2.0 (MHL)
  • Camera:
    • Primary: 4 MP UltraPixels, 2688 x 1520 pixels, autofocus, LED flash
    • Secondary: 2.1 MP, 1080p@30fps, HDR
  • Battery: Non-removable Li-Po 2300 mAh battery

The phone will launch in March but no pricing details have been given yet. Of course, since its a flagship device, no one should expect it to come cheap or at least below Rs. 60,000.

With the HTC One, the Taiwanese brand is once again at the top of the table. With innovative features like an Ultrapixel camera and Infinity Glass, the company can finally watch the phone wind away from the competition for some time coming, or at least until the next Samsung flagship, the Galaxy S IV, or the next big thing is announced. As for now though, its HTC and Sony who are at the top of the ladder in the Android game.
